Joined in the School of Life Sciences, Bharathiar University as Lecturer in Bioinformatics during 2001 later moved as Coordinator for Bioinformatics. Completed fifteen years of teaching and twenty years of postdoctoral research experience. Awarded Doctor of Science in 2007 for the contributions to Plantation Bamboo. Published 12 books, 25 book chapters and 137 research papers in the reputed National and International journals. Several books prescribed as reference books in many universities and colleges throughout India. Book on Plantation bamboo in Tamil awarded as the Best Book award by the Govt. of Tamilnadu during 2001. The H-factor of publication is 15. Generated a funding of Rs. 1.55 Crore from UGC, DBT, ICMR in India and ITTO, Japan. Established the DBT Centre of Bioinformatics in 2006. Introduced new PG. Diploma programme in Cheminformatics under UGC Innovative Programme. Guided 16 Ph.D, 26 M.Phil and 54 PG students. Presently guiding 4 Ph.D scholars and 2 M.Sc students. The Tamilnadu Govt. Honored with Tamilnadu Scientist Award (TANSA) during 2000. Prof.M.S.Swaminathan nominated to Indian Academy of Sciences, NewDelhi, The National Academy of sciences, Allahabad and Indian Academy of Agricultural sciences, NewDelhi for election as Fellow during 2013.
