Dr. Matsushima completed his doctorate in polymer physics at Hokkaido University. After that, he joined Hokkaido Institute of Technology in 1980-1983 and Sapporo Medical University from 1983-2013. In 1986-1988 he joined the University of Virginia, USA, as the visiting associate professor. Now he is the head of Institute of Tandem Repeats. He has studied the structure and evolution of tandem repeats including leucine-rich repeats by bioinformatics and their solution structures by nuclear magnetic resonance and small-angle x-ray scattering. He has published more than 90 scientific publications.
