A Study on Physico-Chemical Parameters and Nutritional Values of Glinus Oppositifolius: A Leafy Vegetable
Glinus oppositifolius (L.) Aug. DC. (Mollungincaeae) is a green leafy vegetable which widely consumed by Sri Lankan communities. It is also used as a medicine by traditional healers. However, no scientific investigations were done to evaluate the importance of G. oppositifolius grown in Sri Lanka. Therefore, in the present study, an attempt was taken to investigate (a) physico-chemical parameters and (b) nutritional properties of G. oppositifolius grown in Sri Lanka in order to assess its value as a leafy vegetable in traditional usage. Materials and methods: Physicochemical parameters and nutritional properties were carried out according to guidelines established by World Health Organization and Association of Analytical Communities respectively. Results: Physico-chemical parameters such as water and ethanol extractable matter (both hot and cold), amounts of total ash, acid insoluble ash and water soluble ash were analyzed. Phyto-chemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, phenolic compounds, tannins, steroids and flavanoids in water and ethanolic extracts (both hot and cold). Further G. oppositifolius contain high amount of protein (20.90.7%), vitamin A (20.7 0.3 %) and iron (27.50.1 %).
